What is Statistics

Statistics is the study of the collection, organization, analysis and interpretation of data.

When the word “Statistics” as a scientific discipline, is singular Ex. “Statistics is not so hard”.

When referring to a quantity (eg. mean or median), statistic is singular and statistics is plural.

Statistics is of two types

  1. Descriptive statistics: Statistical methods can be used for summarizing or describing a collection of data. This is useful in research.
  2. Inferential statistics: Patterns in the data may be modeled in a way that accounts for randomness and uncertainty in the observations, and are then used for drawing inferences about the process or population being studied. Useful to draw conclusions from data that is subjected to random variation.

Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics together called as “Applied Statistics”
