Today we will meditate on another aspect of “The house”. Before that, let’s pray.
Dear loving heavenly Father, thank you for another opportunity to meditate on thy word. Please open our minds to see the beautiful and life-giving truths from thy word. We pray in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.
Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2:5).
In this chapter, the Holy Spirit God extensively explains the process of building the house. If you observe in the above verse we can see,
- The house is a spiritual house
- The stones used to build are living stones.
- We (the believers of Lord Jesus Christ) are those living stones.
- The purpose of this house is to offer spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God.
Now we see how this house is being built up. “Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, (1 Peter 2:7)“. Here, we see there were builders and it is written that they denied a stone while building the house. We can easily understand that this represents the Jewish people of the Lord’s time. They rejected Jesus Christ as the messiah or the savior. But God declared that the rejected stone must be the cornerstone for the new building. What is a cornerstone? A cornerstone (or foundation stone or setting stone) is the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation. All other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure. (source: Wikipedia).
So, being the cornerstone, Jesus Christ is the first stone laid to build this spiritual house. “To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious (1 Peter 2:4)”. Also, “Behold, I lay in Sion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded (1 Peter 2:6)”. And then whoever believes in him, becomes living stones like him. Then all these living stones would be placed according to the will of God and with reference to the chief cornerstone, to finish the glorious spiritual house, in which acceptable sacrifices are offered to glorify God. This spiritual house is also called “the Church”. These days, when we here the word church, we will think about denominations, belief systems or worship patterns that are divided from one another. But the Church we see here is a spiritual house built using all the believers as living stones, set in their appropriate and perfect positions with reference to the chief cornerstone, the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The Church is not divided but united and united in Jesus Christ.
So today we learned the second aspect of the House. The house is the Church. This church is constructed using every believer of Jesus Christ as a stone, with Lord Jesus Christ as the cornerstone or foundation stone.
Dear loving heavenly Father, thank you for teaching the beautiful truth about the house which is nothing but the Church. Thank you for reminding us that we are united in Jesus Christ. Help us to submit to your will to be placed in the perfect position in this Spiritual House. We pray in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
