Greetings in the name of our Lord to you dear beloved of God. Today is Lord’s day and we worship him today with our praises and songs. God inspired me to share a few thoughts for worshipping him. Please keep a Bible with you to refer to the scripture in between. Please turn to Proverbs 3:1-10. Here, we can see a few verses describing what we should do in order to be in good terms with Lord. This portion is bringing 5 thoughts for today as we worship him.

  1. Keep
  2. Bind
  3. Trust
  4. Acknowledge
  5. Fear
  6. Honour

My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee – Proverbs 3:1,2

Here, God reminds us to keep his commandments. These commandments were given to us through His WORD. When we read the word “LAW”, we need to understand that it is “THE WORD OF GOD” but not “THE LAW OF GOD GIVEN TO MOSES”, because our Lord freed us from the Law. If you read carefully, these commandments are to be kept by our “HEART”. This a very important thing to understand. We can do a lot of things not heartfully involving in it, in other words, we can do many things mechanically. God does not want us to keep His commandments mechanically. When can we do anything heartfully? When we LOVE that thing, right? To be able to do according to the commandments of Lord, first, we should love the commandments. To love the commandments, WE SHOULD LOVE THE LORD WITH ALL OUR HEART, WITH ALL OUR SOUL, WITH ALL OUR MIND – Mathew 22:37.

If we do that, God gives us a long life and peace or peaceful long life. In today’s world, we seldom find peace. Many people follow many ways to find peace. They are ignorant of the knowledge of God and fellowship with him. But those who know the LORD and keeps His commandments can say, “In peace in will both lie-down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety – Pslams 4:8”.

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. – Proverbs 3:3,4

This is a lot deeper than we read. These two qualities mercy and truth are God’s qualities. Because He is truth, he cannot ignore the sinful nature, that we exhibit before him. Because He is merciful, he provided us a way to be recovered from that sinful nature. To have these two qualities at the same time is impossible for men. We generally either be truthful or merciful. If anything is going wrong, we often can identify, highlight those wrong things of others. But we cannot love them and help them to change their ways. On the other hand, if we want to show some favor, even though the other side some mistakes or shortcomings are there, we will ignore them to show favor. In this verse, it is written, not only to have them but bind them about thy neck. If you see any jewelry advertisements, you can clearly see the beautiful necklaces around the neck in that picture. The jewelry takes the focus of the viewer. In the same way, these two qualities should be clearly visible to the people who see you and observe you. If you do that, you can find favor both in the sight of God and man. What a wonderful life is that?

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. – Proverbs 3:5,6

Trust means having blindness to our reasoning because of the confidence we have on the other person whom we believe. When we trust God, that means, our logic and our reasoning will not overcome the counsel of God.  You must acknowledge or recognize that God is there with you, in all your situations. Then God directs your paths and you can walk in His direction. God says to his children who trust in him, “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye – Psalm 32:8″.

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. – Proverbs 3:7,8

Fear of the Lord is the most important characteristic of a child of God. In this verse, we find “be not wise in thine own eyes”. Many times, we will try to justify our actions or reactions in life according to our knowledge and understanding. But the word of God says, don’t try to act wise, fear the Lord and depart from the evil ways. If we have the fear of the Lord, that makes us strong. The word of God says, “What man is he that feareth the Lord? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose – Psalm 25:12″

Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase. So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine – Proverbs 3:9,10

Honouring God with our substance is one way of worshipping him. In the old testament, it was a commandment of the God to the Israelites to bring substances when they come to the temple. In the new testament, we don’t find a temple. The church is the temple. When I say the church not a building in a place, but the universal church which is the the body of Christ, which spreads all over the world. When we use our substance which could be money, material or efforts for the edification of the body of Christ, that is honouring our Lord. When we do that, our barns would be full. That means we will not lack anything. God takes care of us.

With these thoughts for today, may God prepare us to worship Him not just with our lips, but heart. Let’s pray.

Our loving heavenly Father, thank you for the thoughts you brought to us on this Lord’s day. Manytimes, I worshipped you with songs and words but my life was not reflecting that worship. Today help me and the brother or sister who is reading this, to accept your word, commandments and authority over our lives. Help us to practice these qualities in our life and teach us to worship you by living a pleasing life in your sight. We pray in the mighty and matchless name of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ, Amen!
